Safety Information

Water is all around us. The best way to be safe is to learn how to swim! If that can’t be done, please make sure you, your children and your friends know the answers to our content below.

What are bodies of water?

Bodies of water can be many things. A pool in your backyard, creeks, rivers, oceans, lakes. They are all around us. Insuring you and your child is safe around all bodies of water is our top priority. The Joys of Swimming has had the opportunity to come to schools and centers in the past year to ensure children and parents are informed on water safety.

What we want your child to know.

Do we walk or run around bodies of water?

A: WALK!

Have your child describe to you some of the different types of “bodies of water”.

Is it okay to swim alone?

A: NO!

If you are alone in a body of water, there is no one around to go get help if there is trouble.

What should you do if YOU are the one in the water having trouble swimming?

A: Float on your back and YELL for HELP!

Have your child practice this by jumping into the water, getting to a back float position and yelling a silly word (ice cream, Jupiter, puppy dog). Being able to yell while floating is extremely important as most children slip under the water very quietly.

What should you do if you see someone in the water having trouble swimming?

A: Go tell a grown-up!

A lot of children will want to “Help them”. The best way to help them is to get a grown-up involved! If that grown-up happens to be you, make sure you have something (anything) to extend your reach to that person so that they don’t pull you under too.
